Ryan Phillippe believes tattoos represent “a map to your life,” and the 39-year-old actor added a new point to his own map this week, getting a cool, intricate arrow tattoo inked on his arm. Ryan Phillippe’s tattoo spans the length of his right forearm, and features a detailed black and white arrow that looks like it is being launched through a set of rings. Ryan talked about getting this very tattoo back in October, telling Harper’s Bazaar, “There’s [a tattoo] I’m dying to get as soon as I get back to LA. It’s going to be a Native arrow. I’ve been reading a lot about Native American history, and I want to do something that kind of connects me to that.”

Ryan Phillippe showed off his new arrow arm tattoo in an Instagram photo posted on December 19, but the tat was actually inked on December 18, the same day he served as a presenter at the 2014 People Magazine Awards in Beverly Hills. The actor captioned the photo of his new tattoo “what woo did to me yesterday,” referring to celebrity tattoo artist Dr. Woo, of the famous Shamrock Social Club tattoo shop in West Hollywood. Dr. Woo is the go-to tattoo artist for some of our favorite inked-up celebrities, including Harry Styles, Drake, Ellie Goulding and David Beckham, and now the talented artist can add Ryan Phillippe to his celebrity clientele.

It’s hard to imagine the hunky actor best known for his role in Cruel Intentions with armfuls of ink, but Ryan Phillippe is certainly no stranger to tattoos, and during a 2010 interview with the tattoo magazine Inked, the 39-year-old said, “Tattoos are like a map to your life. Permanence is bravery. So many things in our lives aren’t permanent. Nothing lasts forever.” If permanence is bravery, then Ryan Phillippe is one brave guy! The actor and father of three sports a nearly-full sleeve of tattoos reaching from his left shoulder to wrist, and this new arrow tattoo on his right forearm looks to us like a great way to start another full sleeve!
