Demi Lovato’s Ribcage & Side Tattoos
Demi Lovato may have gotten her first tattoo when she was only 16, but the mantra has definitely remained relevant in her life. Inspired by lyrics from Bethany Dillon’s song “Beautiful,” Demi Lovato got a tattoo reading “you make me beautiful” inked on her right ribcage in 2008. According to Demi, the song changed her life and lifted her through a dark time in her life when she was struggling with self-image issues. It wasn’t until 2010 that Demi Lovato began treatment for bulimia and self-harming, but her struggles date back to when she was only 12 or 13, being bullied in school for her weight. By the time she sought treatment for her emotional and physical problems, the teen star was too exhausted to deal with them on her own.
In September 2011, Demi Lovato’s “you make me beautiful” tattoo gained a new component, two long feathers reaching down her side. “It’s kind of a Christian tattoo,” said Demi. “So for me it’s religious, but it could be for anybody.” In getting her “you make me beautiful” feathers tattoo Demi Lovato was and is still able to look in the mirror every day and remind herself that she is beautiful and strong.
