Justin Bieber may be making headlines for his musical successes and rapidly growing tattoo collection, but his leading lady, Selena Gomez, isn’t to be outdone. On September 29, 2012, the 20-year-old singer commissioned tattoo artist Bang Bang McCurdy to ink her newest tattoo – a cute and subtle Roman numeral tat on the back of her neck. Rumor has it Selena Gomez’s new tattoo is a tribute to her mom, representing the year she was born. What do you think of the singer and aspiring actress’ newest ink?
Selena Gomez called upon tattoo artist to the stars, Keith “Bang Bang” McCurdy, when she decided she wanted a second tattoo: Roman numerals on the back of her neck. Bang Bang is responsible for many of the tattoos inked on the bodies of stars like Rihanna, who has a similar Roman numeral tattoo inked on her left shoulder as a tribute to her best friend, Melissa Forde. Selena Gomez’s new tattoo isn’t nearly as big or visible as Rihanna’s shoulder inking, but the Roman numeral tat still makes a big statement on the pint-sized beauty. And Selena’s tattoo addition is also in honor of someone she holds near and dear to her heart – her mother!
Selena Gomez’s Roman Numeral Tattoo
Selena Gomez’s new ink reads, “LXXVI,” which represents the number 76 in Roman numerals. Although Selena hasn’t confirmed her tattoo meaning yet, Bang Bang explained, “The tattoo was a tribute to a family member who she said means a lot to her.” Since Selena’s mother, Amanda “Mandy” Teefey, was born in 1976, it would make sense for the 20-year-old singer’s “76” neck tattoo to be in honor of her mother’s birth date. Selena Gomez’s new tattoo was inked at Bang Bang’s tattoo parlor in New York City on September 29, 2012, and he said, “Selena was nervous it might have been painful, so she held her best friend’s hand the whole time. But she did a great job.”
Selena’s First Tat – A Tiny Music Note
Before Selena opted for a more prominent (and likely more painful) tattoo on the back of her neck, she first tested the tattoo waters with a tiny music note inked on the outer part of her right wrist, which she just got in February 2012. According to the singer, the tat is a celebration of her love for music, but it also has a little something to do with her mom. “I was named after a singer [Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez] and music obviously is a big influence for me. And there’s music stuff with my mom that means a lot to me, too.” Although Selena announced that she would be taking a break from music to concentrate primarily on acting in 2012, music is clearly a large part of her life and the music note tattoo will remind her of that for the rest of her life.
Will Selena Catch Up to Justin Bieber’s Tattoos?
The Roman numeral tattoo on her neck is only Selena Gomez’s second tattoo, but if her beau Justin has anything to say about it, the songstress might be adding several more to her collection in the very near future. Justin Bieber has quite a few tattoos of his own, the most recent of which is a small crown inked on the upper part of his chest, believed to be a nod to his reputation as the prince of pop. The Beibs also recently debuted a “Believe” tattoo on his left arm and a Japanese symbol for music on his right arm, both of which are in honor of Bieber’s blooming career in the music industry. Well, Justin may consider himself the prince of pop, but Selena Gomez isn’t to be outdone in the tattoo department. We can’t wait to see what ink she gets next!
