Zayn Malik is full of surprises. Not only did he unexpectedly drop a new single a couple of weeks ago, after promising for what seems like forever that new music was on its way, the singer also revealed a new tattoo on Instagram over the weekend, possibly inspired by said single. Zayn Malik’s new tattoo is inked on his left forearm, next to his checkered flag and lotus flower tattoos, and features the letters “SGT” and what appears to be the date, “2 4 17,” done in black ink. Zayn debuted the fresh ink on his Instagram account on April 2, just a couple of weeks after releasing “Still Got Time,” and we’ve been all in a fluster ever since, trying to decipher the cryptic ink.
Though Zayn has yet to reveal what actually inspired him to get this new arm tattoo, it seems likely that the letters “SGT” stand for Zayn’s new collaboration with PartyNextDoor, “Still Got Time,” a surprise single the pop star released just days after promising that new music was coming “soon, I mean it.” The first track off his new album, which is set to drop this summer, “Still Got Time” features an easygoing rhythm and the lyrics, “You should stop looking for love/because girl, you’ve still got time/This could be something if you let it be something/don’t scare me away.”
Like many other tattoo-loving artists out there, Zayn is no stranger to commemorating his music and career in the form of permanent ink – he has a Mind of Mine album title tattoo on his upper left arm and a strikingly similar “M.S.G. 3 12 12” near his right wrist, as a nod to Madison Square Garden, where One Direction performed on December 3, 2012. In a recent interview with The Times, Zayn talked about his expectations for his upcoming album, which follows up the chart-topping Mind of Mine, saying, “They always say the second album is difficult, but so far I’m really happy with this one. There are real signs of growth and development. Hopefully, as a human being, I’m growing too, in my knowledge and perception.”
While most of us agree that the “SGT” part of the tat likely stands for his surprise “Still Got Time” track, the “2 4 17” date remains a bit of a mystery. American fans are interpreting the date as February 4, 2017, while fans in the UK, where dates are written differently, believe it refers to April 2, 2017, which is the exact date the singer debuted the fresh ink online, and which seems the most plausible option. Other than that, there doesn’t seem to be any particular significance to the date, though we’re sure it holds some kind of personal meaning for Zayn. Stay tuned to find out what exactly that is!
