**Update: Don’t worry folks, it turns out Zayn’s head and neck tattoos were fakes. Looks like he may have just been doing a little guerrilla marketing for his new Mind of Mine album!
We turn our heads for one second and Zayn Malik goes and gets a bunch of new tattoos on his head and neck, and there are plenty of people, including One Direction’s go-to tattoo artist Kevin Paul, who think this is a decision Zayn will eventually regret. Zayn Malik’s new tattoos were revealed in a black and white photo the singer uploaded to Instagram on March 11, in which the pop star is looking to the side, giving us a great look at the fresh and unexpected ink.
One of Zayn’s new tattoos includes a floral design with a phoenix raising its wings and a banner reading “M.O.M.,” which is most likely not a tribute to his mother Trisha, but rather a reference to the singer’s debut solo album Mind of Mine, which is set to drop on March 25. This interesting ink is located on the right side of his face, just in front of his ear, matching up with his hairline and sideburns, and the phoenix tattoo just screams “new beginnings.” Traditionally, phoenix tattoos are meant to represent rebirth, or rising up out of the ashes, and the fact that Zayn has launched a successful solo career after leaving One Direction seems to fall right in line with that reasoning.
The second new tattoo of Zayn’s is a never-before-seen sparrow tat inked on the right side of his neck, which the singer showed off at the same time as his phoenix “M.O.M.” face tattoo. We aren’t quite sure when Zayn had this sparrow tattoo done, but it wasn’t there in a photo Zayn uploaded to Instagram on February 8, so it must be new! Sparrow tattoos have been around for centuries, favored during the early days by sailors who successfully sailed long-distance trips, and some sailors would get a new sparrow tattoo for every five thousand nautical miles they sailed. Today, sparrow tattoos can carry a number of different meanings, including a victory gained, a hardship survived, or a safe return home. Perhaps Zayn finally feels at home in his new solo career?
That’s not all though. In another black and white photo of Zayn that cropped up online recently, posted on Instagram by user @nabildo, the singer appears to be sporting another new tattoo on his neck, this one on the left side, but we haven’t quite been able to make out the design of his piece. Check back with us soon to learning the significance behind Zayn Malik’s other neck tattoo.
Some have speculated that Zayn Malik’s tattoos may actually be fake, but being that Zayn has been getting more and more comfortable with bold, visible tattoos over the years, we wouldn’t be surprised if the ink is permanent. Kevin Paul, who is no stranger to face tattoos, believes that Zayn will regret his face ink, saying that “the placement is really bad, considering he doesn’t have any other tattoos on his head. I think he’ll end up regretting it and it would be hard to cover up without making the new design a lot bigger and darker.”
Zayn Malik certainly isn’t the first artist to get a tattoo on his face, but we never thought we’d see the day when the former One Direction singer joined the likes of rappers like Gucci Mane and Young Thug.
