One of Zayn Malik’s earliest tattoos is the small yin-yang symbol he had inked on the outside of his left wrist in September 2011. The yin-yang has become an extremely popular symbol in recent years, particularly as a tattoo design, but that doesn’t take away from its important meaning. The concept of yin and yang in Zayn Malik’s tattoo represents the ancient Chinese belief that nothing can exist without balance, and that forces that appear to be opposing are actually interconnected in the natural world. Yin and yang are complementary forces, interacting with one another to form a whole that is greater than either separate part, and this concept of duality can be applied to many different aspects of life. For example, light cannot exist without dark, life cannot exist without death, etc. This is the reason that the black and white sections of the yin-yang fit together perfectly, with a small white dot in the black section (yin) and a small black dot in the white section (yang). Perhaps Zayn’s arm tattoo represents the duality existing between his private and public identities.
