It appears One Direction may have inspired more than just musical success when they invited the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer on their Take Me Home tour last year. In addition to their boyish good looks, the One Direction boys are best known for their massive collection of tattoos, and now 5 Seconds of Summer’s Ashton Irwin is following in their footsteps, getting his first-ever tattoo this week. Calum Hood and Michael Clifford are well on their way in the tattoo department already, and Luke Hemmings has gone the piercing route instead, but Ashton had been completely tattoo-free before revealing a hashmark tattoo on his wrist on May 30, 2014.
Rumors first started circulating about a possible Ashton Irwin tattoo when he and his bandmates were spotted hanging around a tattoo parlor last week, and the rumors appeared to be confirmed when the singer was later spotted with a telltale bandage wrapped around his wrist. It wasn’t until May 30 that Ashton finally took to the band’s Facebook page to reveal his new tattoo, which features a pretty crude outline of five tally marks on the outside of his right wrist…ink that is oddly similar to Louis Tomlinson’s tattoo of five tally marks on his right sleeve. Ashton accompanied the pic of his new tattoo with the caption: “This band means everything to me, and so do my brothers, so I got this! X.”
This certainly isn’t the first time a boybander has gotten a tattoo inspired by his band; 1D’s Liam Payne has a huge chevron tattoo on his arm dedicated to Harry, Niall, Louis and Zayn, in addition to a large quote tattoo on his arm reading: “Everything I wanted but nothing I’ll ever need,” which he says is a tribute to his bandmates. In addition to his tally marks sleeve tattoo, Louis also has a flock of five birds inked on his arm, which represent him and his bandmates, and all but Niall sport matching screw tattoos on their ankles, which they say keeps them grounded.
It was only a matter of time before the 5 Seconds of Summer guys started emulating their One Direction brothers, but to get a tattoo almost identical to one Louis Tomlinson already has? Not cool. Apparently though, Ashton put a ton of thought into a new tattoo before actually taking the plunge, tweeting back in April 2013, “I want a tattoo but I don’t know if they would suit me 🙂 thoughts!!?” 5SOS fans around the world must have given Ashton a collective thumbs up, because the 19-year-old has officially joined the tattoo club!
