Harry Styles appears to be cleaning house when it comes to his random scribble tattoos, and recently covered up his “Things i can’t” tattoo with a black and white image of the Holy Bible. And around the same time that he revealed his Bible tattoo, the One Direction singer showed off yet another tat: the phrase “Silver Spoon” on the back of his arm. Harry Styles’ tattoos come just one week after the pop star covered up his “I can’t change” tat with a cool black and white anchor tattoo on his left wrist. Something has Harry re-thinking his collection of tiny random tattoos, and we’re wondering if it’s his blossoming relationship with the always stylish and put-together Kendall Jenner. Whatever the influence is, we’re happy to see Harry trading in his silly scribble phrase tattoos for some larger, more meaningful ink!
Harry’s Holy Bible Arm Tattoo
Back in October 2012, Harry Styles showed off matching tattoos on his right and left forearms that read “Things i can” and “Things i can’t” in a funky black font, which he had done by a tattoo artist in Dublin, Ireland. Although Harry never revealed the meaning behind his arm tattoos, we took them to represent the well-known serenity prayer that reads “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” In a surprise move in January 2014, Harry covered up his “Things i can’t” tattoo on his left forearm with a Holy Bible, which is a more definite symbol of the singer’s faith. Our only question now is will Harry cover up his “Things i can” tattoo too or keep it as a positive mantra?
“Silver Spoon” Tat on Harry Styles’ Arm
Okay, so Harry Styles isn’t completely done with written word tattoos. At about the same time that he debuted his Bible tat, Harry revealed another tattoo inked on his left arm, featuring the words “Silver Spoon” inked in capital letters in a sort of crude black font. Harry’s “Silver Spoon” tattoo is inked on the back of his arm, just above his elbow and just below his handshake tattoo, and the ink has us wondering if the tat has something to do with his incredible success in One Direction. In the English language, the expression “silver spoon” is synonymous with wealth, especially inherited wealth, and is often used to describe someone who is born into a wealthy family; i.e. he was “born with a silver spoon in his mouth.”
Harry and his 1D bandmates have shot to fame in recent years, and One Direction is now a household name, so the “Silver Spoon” ink is probably referring to the band’s worldwide success. However, Harry Styles’ tattoo could easily be misinterpreted, because the phrase “silver spoon” often has a negative connotation, like the person doesn’t appreciate or deserve his advantage in life. There are a few other possible interpretations of Harry’s “Silver Spoon” tattoo though. “Silver Spoons” was also an American TV show with a theme song by the same name that included these lyrics:
Some believe that Harry’s “Silver Spoon” tattoo is yet another romantic tribute to bandmate Louis Tomlinson, but the jury’s still out on that one.
